Woodturners will benefit from more than 65 years of master craftsman Dennis White's woodturning experience and sheer magic as he demonstrates turning projects for creating two boxes and goblets. The DVD also reveals a threading technique—with the lathe at 400 rpm—and a pair of hand chasers. Each step is clearly explained with superb close-ups to aid precision.

Once again, WOODWORKING . . . in action ! ! ! presents a look at techniques both old and new, and basic and advanced, encompassing along the way disciplines as varied as furnituremaking, veneering, carving, inlay and an unusual method of bowlmaking, as demonstrated by Rich Dowin, that starts with a single flat board, albeit often composed of many different pieces of contrasting wood, to end up as a a hollow vessel!

Our second feature focuses on Richard Scott Newman, well known for studio furniture of exquisite perfection, the result of a sophisticated design sensibility and an enginered approach to solving construction problems that would leave most woodworkers gasping.

Another technique that is centuries old, but which still amazes the uninitiated is linenfold. It is, however, surprisingly simple, as we see demonstrated here with nothing more complicated than a wooden round plane and a common carving gouge.

Scott Grove, like Richard Scott Newman, is another Rochester-based woodworker with connections both to the Rochester Institute of Technology and the best-regarded designer and artist in America: Wendel Castle. In this segment Scott shows us how to deal with highly figured-, but often difficult to work veneer.

Whatever you build, inlay can add a special touch, and Gerard Ryan shows us how simple this can be.

Lastly, Tips & Tricks demystifies the process of sharpening a scraper, and the Gallery department offers a look at two husband and wife teams engaged in producing beautiful pieces from the woods around them.

Issue 11 begins with North Bennet Street School graduate John Hartcorn demonstrating a safe and exact way to cut one of the hallmarks of his immaculate contemporary furniture, the bridle joint, on the tablesaw and mortiser.

Marc Adams returns for an intriguing look at bending plywood for veneering using the kerf-cut method; easier than you might think once you understand the structure of the material.

For a close look at how things used to be made, and why, Inside Story focuses on a pair of 19th-century chests. Graham Blackburn discusses these potentially rewarding projects for many tyro woodworkers, especially those with simpler shops.

You might think that oarmaking was another age-old handcraft, but as Steve Kaulback of Adirondack Guide Boat fame shows us, using routers with simple jigs can guarantee the handmade look without sacrificing speed or accuracy.

How to cope without using endangered materials such as exotic pernambuco and elephant ivory, is the subject of the elegant exposé by Sue Lipkins of stringed-instrument bowmaking. Be sure to check out the exquisite miniature planes!

The regular Departments feature nationally known finisher Bob Flexner sharing some tips and tricks for producing ultra smooth finishes, and a Gallery Department look at some work by Jo Roessler and his magnificent Easthampton Massachusetts shop located in a restored movie theater.

Our lead article in this issue completes the story of the Goddard Table, a Newport masterpiece recreated by Allan Breed, who here shows us how the distinctive ball-and-claw feet are carved, complete with their undercut talons.

W. Patrick Edwards also makes a return to demonstrate two amazing French marquetry tools he uses both in his San Diego school and his own restoration shop: the picker and the chevalet. These tools permit some of the most detailed work ever done. He also gives us a primer course in traditional hide glue.

Back on the East Coast, Mario Rodriguez lets us in on one of his windsor chair courses held at the Connecticut Valley School of Woodworking. The emphasis here is on technique and individuality; each student makes a unique chair perfectly representing his own personality.

This issue includes a great segments on turning. Alan Lacer, past president of the American Association of Woodturners, provides in-depth information on tool preparation, as he takes us, in this excerpt from his Telly Awards Wiiner video Getting Started Right, through the necessary steps of shaping and sharpening.

In addition to these great features that you will return to time-and-time again, you will also find our regular departments, such as Face-to-Face, where we meet personalities from the woodworking world, such as Kelly Mehler, who runs the Kelly Mehler School of Woodworking in Berea, Kentucky, and the Gallery, which in this issue features two astonishing pieces by Santa Barbara designer and woodworker Paul Schurch, one of which was seven years in the making! Tips & Tricks is another invaluable resource, and this time we watch noted chairmaker Brian Boggs show us how to prepare the perfect dowel joints upon which many of his exquisitely accurate rockers and ladderbacks are dependent.
